10/05/18 Shonn Cup Final; Sedgley Park Celtic 1-4 Haroldeans || League; Reich 2-4 South Mcr 2nd

Haroldeans put any doubts about their credentials to bed with a crushing Shonn Cup Final victory over closest rivals Sedgley Park Celtic. Any body who thought that their Morrison Trophy adventure which ended in a narrow defeat last Sunday would effect their performance was greatly mistaken. Sedgley had only lost one game in the MJSL since September and sit currently top of the league so a very close encounter was expected.

The Mancunians definitely had the better of the early exchanges on the great surface provided at Brantingham Road. Haroldeans seemed to have a hangover from their National Trophy loss as SPC’s midfield controlled proceedings. Several corners failed to produce a clear scoring opportunity but close efforts from Jake Kelly and Jack Berman caused concern in the Merseysiders ranks. A goal at this point could have changed the course of the match.

Haroldeans provided a first attack and in doing so the first goal on the night after 11 minutes totally against the run of play. Maxim Green left 2 Sedgley players in his wake with devastating pace and crossed low from the byline for Max Barnett to tap home into an empty net with the keeper and other defenders beaten by the pace and quality of the cross and movement of the forwards.

This was a catalyst for Haroldeans to settle and take over the match for the next 75 minutes. Indeed just before the half hour mark, some neat passing found Adam Shiffman free in the penalty area whose clinical low shot was drilled home from 8 yards to the joy of his fellow players. In the midfield Sedgley’s work rate was good but to some extent nullified by Haroldeans getting the ball quickly to their pacy strikers by pinpoint long passing. The first half ended at 2-0 to the reigning Cup holders with Sedgley looking a little shell shell-shocked and lacking invention.

The next goals was going to be crucial with Sedgley still very much in the game and again they started the half reasonably well but could not find any joy in their early attacks. In doing so they began to leave gaps in the middle and at the back and unsurprisingly Haroldeans once again produced the goods when it mattered with two goals in quick succession.

On 57 minutes, Haroldeans managed to feed the ball out wide left to Green who twisted and turned Steinberger and then unleashed a low shot that Sam Franks got a hand to but the ball was deflected home as a defender tried to clear straight at Barnett for his second. A devastating blow clearly and worst was to come for the green and white hoops as Adam Shiffman hit a stunning 40 yard pass over the Sedgley defence to Green, this time on the right who left the other full back on the floor and squared for Barnett to complete his hatrick from 10 yards out leaving Franks no chance.

At 4-0 there was no way back for SPC, indeed Haroldeans had several other chances that Sam Franks managed to keep out with some great agility and skill, from a header and two powerful shots. As the game entered ithe last 20 minutes Sedgley had more of the ball and possession around the Haroldeans penalty area plus a few free kicks but with no joy at reducing the deficit. Haroldeans counter attacked but tired and Sedgley finally scored with the best goal of the match. A true solo effort as Captain Saul Shapiro evaded several tackles and from 20 yards chipped the Haroldeans keeper superbly to round off the evening.

Haroldeans scored at crucial moments in the match and were clinical in the process. Both teams matched each other in terms of combative styles and that early chance that went wide may have changed the match had it been 6 inches the other side of the post. Obviously this means that Haroldeans captured the 2nd leg of the domestic treble with the big league match to come this Sunday where they both go head to head again.

Man of the match candidates were Sam Franks for his goalkeeping and Max Barnett for his hatrick but both were beaten by Maxim Green who provided that extra inspiration and speed on the night.

MJSL Sporting Manager of the Year (Irving Basso Trophy) was awarded to Mike Bloomberg (Haroldeans), as a result of referees marking him 100% for his behaviour, conduct and all round sportsmanship plus opinions of other teams.

MJSL player of the Year went to Adam Shiffman (Haroldeans) for the second year running, as a result of feedback from the other teams and referees through the season.

Photos will appear shortly.

In the league, Reich took a two goal lead against South Mcr 2nd at Frederick Rd but ended up losing 4-2. There are 3 more League matches on Sunday as the 70th MJSL campaign reaches the last fortnight.
