Gigg Lane hosted this season’s Faye and Henry Shonn Cup Final and Haroldeans ran out 2-0 winners in a closely fought contest with Reich. Chances were at a premium for most of the match, so much so that the goals came in the second half from a scramble following a corner and a penalty.
The Merseysiders had more possession in the first half but rarely threatened the Reich penalty area, whilst the Mancunians created a few potential counter attacking moments but without any joy. In the second period, a Haroldeans corner found its way through to Sam Kersh and following a first attempt which was saved by Reich keeper Leo Adelman, the ball was bundled home on 57 minutes.
After this, the game seemed to open up a bit more as Reich pushed further forward and Haroldeans needed to defend a little deeper. This provided more opportunity for a counter attack, and allowed ultimately for a breakaway and then a penalty that was drilled home by Eden Harris after 75 minutes to make it 2-0. There were close attempts and uncomfortable moments in the Haroldeans penalty area as the end of the match drew close but on the night Reich just could not find their clinical touch.
Adam Taylor was presented with the Man of the Match award by Brian Myer and the Haroldeans Captain received the Shonn Trophy from Mike Shonn. Match officials were ref Jason McAuley and assistants Harry Winters and Tim Myerson with 4th official Behnam Sarani.
